Upstate Artists Guild faces possible eviction

ALBANY — The Upstate Artists Guild is facing eviction from its Lark Street home of five years after failing to pay rent for four months, representatives said.

“We got behind, and we just don’t have the money, but we’re trying to put something together,” UAG President Rebecca Schoonmaker said Monday.

The guild has not paid the $1,200-a-month rent on its gallery space, at 247 Lark St., since September. Last Friday it received notice of legal action being taken by the landlord. A court date is set for Friday that could set in motion eviction proceedings and lead to UAG being homeless by the end of the month, Schoonmaker said.

UAG has launched a campaign asking for donations from its 120 artist members as well as the public to try to raise the nearly $5,000 needed to pay back rent. The group has also applied for a line of credit from its bank, according to Schoonmaker.

For 12 days, Occupy Albany protesters have camped out in Academy Park in violation of the small city park’s legal closing time.

Assistant Corporation Counsel Jeffery Jamison said one of the roadblocks to enforcing the curfew, a move Jennings earlier supported, has been the fact that the city has never done it before.

Because of Hydraulic Fracturing, or fracking, all these threats can become a reality ONLY IF YOU LET IT. Many people don’t know what fracking is. In short, fracking is when tons of toxic, known carcinogenic chemicals are sprayed into cracks in rocks with sand or sediment to bring up natural gas. I mean sure, natural gas may help our economy, but it’s going to ruin our planet. The Marcellus Shale is where most of the drilling is going to be done. States such as New York, Pennsylvania, West Virginia etc., will be affected. The health of many animals and humans is at stake if we let fracking happen. Make sure that you are informed!!!
